I love looking at peoples houses, I'm nosy like that, and I think there are a lot of others like me out there. I've watched so many house/room tours from Youtubers and bloggers that I really don't follow, just because I love being nosy, I love seeing peoples things! Our homes, like our clothes, are one of the biggest reflections of ourselves and our bedrooms in particular are very personal. From being little our bedrooms are where we store our most valued possessions; we plaster the walls with pictures and posters and proudly display our favourite trinkets.
This is especially important when you get to university - when you are given a plain box room, most likely with sick coloured carpet and even sickier looking curtains and presented with the challenge of making it yours. In halls especially your room will be where you spend most of your time, so its important to everyone to make it feel like home. At university your room even becomes a tool to make friends. It gives people an immediate impression of the kind of person you are, what you like and sparks conversation - who knows, that Adventuretime poster you've stuck up and someone's noticed might lead to the start of a beautiful friendship. Plus lets face it, whoever has the coolest room will always have people in there. Take my friend Stan - a TV, several house plants, a green light and an impressive NERF gun collection were all that was needed to make his room the automatic hang-out spot for the rest of the year.Alternatively you could go down the route of one of my other friends, Lindsay and just have a lot of alcohol in there at all times.
Anyway, I think you get the picture. Rooms are important. Now without further ado I will get to the point of this long introduction. In this post I will be sharing with you my most sacred, inner sanctum - my university bedroom. Hopefully this might give people ideas about how to jazz up their own rooms and inspire people to get creative. If this is not the case and sounds like a load of old shit then hey, at least you can enjoy it for the simple pleasure of having a poke around someone else's stuff!! On with the show...
P.S I tidied up for this so you better appreciate it.
Okay so to kick things off, here is a panorama of what my room looks like as you step inside. As I'm now in my third year and living in a house my room is fairly big. My halls room was tiny and my room in last years house was a fair bit smaller than this yet I still managed to squeeze all my stuff into both! This year I have loads more room for activities, which is ace.
One amazing detail about my room this year is that behind the mysterious door to the left is actually a smaller room which houses my wardrobe... what some might call A WALK IN WARDROBE! Okay, its not really, its a cupboard with the wardrobe in it but it makes me feel fancy and that's all that matters.
The postcards on the left of the door are from Paperchase. Mmmm coats...
My wardrobe adorned with a swarm of butterflies. I was quite hard to photograph this room as its so small but trust me: its cool.
On the window in there I've got a string of these littles guys, which I bought as a Halloween decoration but decided to keep up all year round.
Next up here's a little looksie at my book shelf. See its many books! I've also got my incense, magazines and a few of my favourite knick-knacks stored here, like my waving cat, Harry Potter Wand and candles in shapes of assorted animals and fruits. Fairly lights are a great way to make things look very pretty and Pinterest-y, mine are just old Christmas lights.
Here on the adjacent wall are my chest of drawers. These, thankfully, are a fine and sturdy set of drawers so they can handle the sheer weight of all my clothing with no problem. In my last uni house they were less than sturdy and all the bottoms of the draws fell out, the wardrobe door also came off in my hand but the less said about that furniture the better. There's also lots of room on top for yet more knick-knacks! Hurray!
My beautiful skull candle that I unfortunately dropped on the floor and is now missing half of its cranium.
My half-shell from a charity shop that I use for throwing my keys and stuff, and a lovely handwritten postcard I got from my friend Emily the other day. *Anecdote time* the shell is currently full of beads because of an incident that happened the other day after I had done my Spice Girls themed 'what would you wear if...?'. The necklace I was wearing is only just longer than a choker but I decided to make it into a full choker to look extra nineties, unfortunatley I may have fastened it a bit too tight. As I was getting changed I sneezed, causing the necklace to snap and beads to fly everywhere like something from a slapstick comedy - whoops.
A quote list that we kept during first year and then Lindsay printed out as a birthday present for me, a banana from this years Billy Pierce panto in Bradford (don't ask) and a Port-sipper. I don't really like port but its just as fun when filled with vodka.
Here's the next side of my room. The posters are all from the Indie Rock Poster Book which you can buy here;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Indie-Rock-Poster-Book-Project/dp/081187818X . Its very cool and indie-ish and all that good stuff. There's also my ppom-pom mirror I made and featured in a previous post.
Here's my fun purple, elephanty light shade. Light shades are a great, cheap-ish way of making your room look funky fresh, especially one that makes everything a nice colour.
Next up is my desk which houses lots of fun stuff. All my make-up, hair and other beautifying things live here as well as all of my important stationary items. Of course there are also lots of trinkets (sensing a theme here). Its a really nice big desk and although the chair is a bit crappy my flat-cat IKEA cushion makes it a bit more comfy.
My lovely new succulent plant, he only needs watering about once every fortnight - my kind of guy. The candle holder is from a charity shop and my little turtle and Buddha are from a market in Ibiza.
Rings upon rings...
A telephone shaped lighter and the King on a mint box from Las Vegas.
Another amazing feature of this room is the giant bay window, which makes the room really nice and bright. The curtains are new from IKEA as the ones that came with the room were pretty rank. I know I said to expect sick-coloured curtains but these looked like they might actually have real spew on them - not cool.
A close up on one of my little elephant pas who hang out on my window.
You may have noticed the little people shaped things all around the bottom of the room above the skirting board. These are actually tiny models from various catwalk shows that I painstakingly cut out an stuck to the wall. You can find these in special fashion month editions of magazines that showcase a sample of all the designers shows - mine are from Marie Claire Runway. They also feature them in ELLE Collections but they are far too sacred to chop up!
Hey, tiny Cara Delevigne.
Next up is THE BED. The most important part of any bedroom, nay any house is the bed. I <3 bed.
Lovely bedding from eBay.
One of my most prized possessions and bestie friends, my Pusheen cushion that my lovely boyf got me for my last birthday. I am obsessed.
Here's my bedside table which is fairly standard except for my very cool orb light from IKEA. There were a few colours to choose from but I ended up going for pink because I think it looks like a giant bubble of bubblegum! Notice my very academic and scholarly books (which I definitely read) on the table as well as a bottle of Sainsbury's basics vodka peeking out from behind - its all about balance, people.
My oh-so sexy pin-up calendar above the table.
Another top way to make your room nicer is to partially cover the most likely nasty grey/brown carpet with a tasty and colourful rug. Featuring a cameo appearance by my toes.
Saving one of the best bits till last, the wall above my bed is one of my favourite bits about my room. Its made up of in postcards featuring covers of The New Yorker which feature amazing illustrations from a host of different artists. I love them and honestly they are really beautiful - every time I look at them I notice another little detail I'd previously missed in one of the illustrations. They are a TOTAL ball ache to put up but the effect in is amazing.
So there we have it, that's my room. Hope you liked having a nosy!
Love to you all (cos I'm feeling nice),
Daisy
