Friday Playlist - Favourite songs of 2014

Hello, tis the flowers! As we enter into the new year we though this would be the obvious choice for the Friday Playlist - saying a fond wave goodbye to 2014 by counting down some of our favourite music of the year.

Daisy

Now as most of my friends know, I generally favour old music but I am no music snob! I'm not going to be a nob head and say 'oh the modern music business is just terrrrrible blah blah blah', because there are loads and loads of songs and albums I've genuinely really enjoyed this year. While most of my favourite music is still dated before 1980 I'm always partial to something fresh and new as well.
Here are my top picks...

1. Bombay Bicycle Club - Luna

This whole album So Long, See You Tomorrow has been on repeat in my room all year - I love it - so it was really hard just pick just one track. The whole thing is so rich and varied and I think its the richness of Luna that made me eventually pick it out as my favourite. Everything about it is so full and so bursting at the seams with life and amazingness! As rule you have to have it on as loud as possible and ideally be alone in your room so you can dance about like a fool and shout 'I'M READY FOR YOU TO FIND OUUUUTTT' really loudly. High on my list of life goals: perform a syncronised swimming routine to this song.

2. Lykke Li - Gunshot

Another one that needs to be on full volume to be properly enjoyed Gunshot is another one of my obsessions this year. While I think the video is trying a little to hard to be 'artsy' the song completely makes up for it. Its powerful and dramatic and melodic and her voice is suuuper dreamy and ethereal. Don't go thinking I'm too cool though - I found this song not because I'm a top indie music aficionado and Lykke Li fan, but because of the Peugeot 108 advert.

3. Hozier - Take Me To Church

Powerful, dramatic, ethereal? I sense a pattern emerging, perhaps I've been feeling especially brooding this year! While this song is stirring and dark and everything it is also ridiculously catchy, I've had it going round and round for days. In all seriousness this song has a really strong message about acceptance and the role of religion in discrimination against LBGT people that particularly resonated with me with the news of transgender teen Leelah Alcorn's suicide, which you can read more about here. The song is beautiful and addictive however I would not recommend watching the video too many times because it is totally heartbreaking!

4. Nico & Vinz - Am I Wrong?

Something a bit more upbeat, thank god! I first heard this song in summer at work on BBC Radio Two and the more I heard it the more I loved it. Its not heavy or pretentious, its just a really chilled, upbeat, summery song with luuurvely vocals that never fails to make me smile.

5. George Ezra - Blame It On Me

The tinkly bit in the background of this songs chorus makes me so happy I could probably just listen to that for three and a half minutes! George Ezra has such an earthy and soulful deep voice that really make his songs stand out and I think would be very well applied to a cover version of Chocolate Rain. Ezra's songs are pretty simple in theory but in reality pack a huge punch and Blame It On Me  in particular is another song I can have a cracking bedroom dance along to - which is really the test of quality for any upbeat song I encounter.

Honourable mentions: Tayor Swift - Blank Space, One Direction -Night Changes (Can't help it I love them), Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?, Lana Del Rey - Westcoast, Route 94 - My Love, Paloma Faith - Only Love Can Hurt Like This, 5SOS - Don't Stop

My delightful friend and fellow blogging person Lindsay has also compiled a similar list that you can find here

Lily

1.George Ezra - Drawing Board

One of my most recent obsessions surprisingly is George Ezra, I have been listening to his new album non-stop the past few weeks. I think at the minute drawing board does have to be my favourite as well as our brother max’s, who recommended George Ezra to me. I like this song because I love his damn sexy voice, but also because the lyrics are really clever and funny.

2. Marmozets - Hit The Wave

As I found from my year music overview from Spotify, marmozets were my top album this year, as I did listen to it on repeat. I found it difficult to choose one song from the album as my favourite, but I think this song just pipped it to the post. I am sooo jealous of Becca’s voice, which just make the song so much more epic.

3.The Pretty reckless – Going To Hell

Okay so I already wrote a bit about this song in my favourite albums post, but I love it, so it deserves a place on my favourites. This is the title track from the album Going To Hell, and it was the first song released. I was instantly in love with it as soon as I heard it, and the video is really cool – which also increased my love for Taylor Momsen.

4.Slash – beneath the savage sun

I think out of all these songs this has to my all-time favourite song of 2014, I was so excited for slash’s new album release, and this song was instantly my favourite. The song is about elephant poaching and the way it’s written is really clever. The anger conveyed in the song also gets you so much more pumped up when listening to it. They performed this when I went to see slash a few weeks ago and it was awesome!

5.Lana Del Ray – Westcoast

Me and dad were both obsessed with this song at the same time so we used to listen to it incessantly in his car on the way to school/work. It’s just such a cool song, and a good song to chill out to.

Honourable mentions: Tonight alive – the edge, Royal blood – out of the black, Slash – The Unholy, Lower than Atlantis – here we go, 5sos – Rejects, The Pretty Reckless – Sweet Things, George Ezra – blame it on me, Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk (This is my jam!), Paloma Faith - Only Love Can Hurt Like This (Off the Cuff)

Cheers for listening, hope your ears were satisfied by our choices!
Byeeee.

Friday Playlist: Movie Soundtracks

Hello and welcome to the Friday Playlist where this week we will be running down some of our favourite music from the world of the silver screen. The movie soundtrack is tricky to get right, however when it is done well it can make a movie and sometimes turn out better than the film itself. Before you ask - No! There will be NO FROZEN featuring on this list - pretty sure everyone over the age of 7 has had their fill of that for one year. Lights, camera...

Daisy

I do love a good movie soundtrack - a fact that made this list fairly difficult for me. I feel like I've missed out some gems and if I had longer to think about it I might come up with a completely different set. Having said this I really like all the ones I have chosen and stand by them as amazing soundtracks. I banned myself from including Beatles films as of course the soundtracks are the actual albums and then the list would have ended up as them exclusively!

1. The Great Gatsby (2013)

Whilst Baz Luhrmann's film extravaganza of the classic Fitzgerald novel got mixed reviews, the soundtrack received high praise and I though was perhaps the standout feature (other than sweet Leo, of course). I personally love the juxtaposition of the 20s setting with modern music but I'm a fan of this in general - I think its just really, really cool - with Luhrmann's 'Romeo and Juliet' being another soundtrack favourite of mine. I think all the songs are really smartly chosen and although I dig the jazz inspired party numbers my stand-out tracks are three of the more dramatic numbers; Lana Del Rey's 'Young and beautiful', Jack White's 'Love is blindness' and Florence + the Machine's 'Over the love'. After I saw the movie I became particularly obsessed with 'young and beautiful', there was one afternoon where I listen to that and Justin Timberlake's 'Mirrors' one after the other, on repeat, for about two hours. It was weird.

2. Death Proof (2007)

Of course there HAD to be a Tarantino soundtrack on here somewhere seeing as they are always the shit and my pick is Death Proof. This lesser known Tarantino film came out as part of his Grindhouse double feature and stars a whole host of strong, sexy, kick-ass female characters along with a very creepy Kurt Russell and a deadly muscle car. This is an incredibly smooth and slick soundtrack and a film I would highly recommend- my favourite tracks have to be April March's 'Chick habit' (listen to this track if nothing else) and 'Hold tight' by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch. Who the hell are they you ask? Well to quote one of the films many leading ladies Jungle Julia - 'For your information, Pete Townshend, at one point, almost quit The Who. And if he had, he would have ended up in this group, thus making it Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, Tich and Pete. And if you ask me, he should have'.

3. Almost Famous (2000)

This Grammy winning soundtrack totally captures the 70s rock vibe of this cult classic film. I love this era and genre of music so its no surprise that this film and its soundtrack really tickle my fancy and for a movie all about the 70s music scene it really would have been a bad job if they didn't get the music right. The most famous musical moment in 'Almost Famous' is of course the Elton John 'Tiny Dancer' scene and thus is a major highlight of this amazing soundtrack. My other favourites include David Bowie's 'Waiting for the man', The Beach Boys' 'Feel Flows' and Thunderclap Newman's 'Something in the air' but every single track is great. Just an all round eargasm.

4. The Big Lebowski (1998)

Another cult classic with a killer soundtrack: The Big Lebowski. Featuring classic tunes, covers and an original score from Carter Burwell the eclectic soundtrack is always highly praised - its pretty much all over the place but somehow it really works. Standouts for me are Kenny Rogers' 'Just dropped in', Creedence Clearwater Revival 'Lookin' out my backdoor' and the incredible Gypsy Kings cover of 'Hotel California'. Someone get me a white Russian.
(This YouTube playlist is a bit all over the place but just skip tracks at your leisure)

5. Help! (1965)

I'M SORRY! I tried, I really did but to not include a Beatles film would just be lying! I hope you can forgive me. I first saw 'Help!' about five years ago and it is what got me into the band in the first place. It was my first real exposure to their music that wasn't drunk people singing 'Hey Jude' and what lead me to their other albums and to fall in love with them. This album marks The Fab Four's step away from mop-top boy band and towards seriously good songwriting - even if you aren't a mega fan this is a truly great seminal album that represents a landmark in the history of music. Its hard to pick favourites but at a push I would say 'The night before', 'Another Girl', 'I need you', 'You're going to lose that girl', 'Ticket to ride' 'Its only love' and the single most covered song of all time 'Yesterday'. Just listen to it - you will not be disappointed.
If you're a fan watch the film as well - to many its a pretty corny but its a fangirls dream come true.

Honorable Mentions

American Hustle (2013) - Elton John 'Goodbye Yellowbrick Road' , Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) - Jefferson Airplane 'Somebody to Love', School of Rock (2003) - Stevie Nicks 'Edge of seventeen', Kill Bill (2003) - The 5. 6. 7. 8s 'WooHoo', Easy Rider (1969) - Jimi Hendrix 'If 6 was 9'.

Lily

(From Daisy - I strongly approve all of these choices)

1. Avengers Assemble (2012)

As if The Avengers film could get any cooler, it also has an awesome rock fueled soundtrack.  Although not technically included in the soundtrack, a part me and my dad love is when Tony Stark arrives as iron man playing 'Shoot to thrill' by AC/DC and puts Loki in his place. I love the whole soundtrack but some of my favourite tracks are; 'Live to rise' by Soundgarden, 'Shake the ground' by Cherri bomb  & 'Even if I could' by Papa roach.

2. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003)

The soundtrack to The Lord of the Rings make the trilogy so much more epic, Howard Shore created the perfect songs for the battle scenes which just gets you pumped up even more.  The use of a full orchestra for the soundtrack fits so perfectly and really gives the films a more fantasy feel to them which I love. So much time and consideration were put into the making of this soundtrack to fit each scene, and it really shows, there are some beautiful pieces of music. My favourite tracks would have to be; 'The fellowship', 'In dreams', 'The sacrifice of Faramir' ft. Billy Boyd (which is awesome on the trailer for the hobbit) & Foundations of stone (this song gives me chills).                             (This video is three hours long and has all three films in one so its probably best to open in in YouTube to choose tracks)

3. The Shrek Films (2001-2010)

The Shrek films are some of my favourite childhood films ever, they're films you could watch at any age and still love Them. The soundtracks are full of feel good songs and a wide range of genres. They feature some classics songs, my favourites including; 'Funky town' by Lipps inc. , 'Ever fallen in love' by Pete yorn, 'Accidentally in love' by Counting Crows (which is an adorable song), 'Hallelujah' by Rufus Wainwright & 'Holding out for a hero' performed by Jennifer Saunders

4. Sherlock Holmes (2009)

The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer really makes the Sherlock Holmes film it’s just so f-ing cool, I love the quirkiness and the old fashioned feel to it which perfectly reflects the Sherlock Holmes as a character. My favourite track would have to be the opening song called 'Discombobulate'.

5. Jackass 3D

The Jackass films are some of favourites, I’ve watched them soo many times and I still piss my pants laughing every time. The soundtrack to Jackass 3D is a mixture of awesome and hilarious songs which is basically what jackass is all about, awesome guys doing hilarious things. My favourite tracks are; 'The kids are back' by Twisted Sister, 'Party in my pants' by Rodger Alan Wade, 'Afterworld' by CKY & 'You can’t roller-skate in a buffalo herd' by Roger Miller (one of my favourite parts to the movie).

There we have it, another Friday Playlist done and dusted! Hope you enjoyed our picks.
Have a lovely weekend.

Friday Playlist: Favourite Glee Performances

ITS HERE! FINALLY!!! Yes, here it is. Our first Friday playlist in about two months, hurray! So no waffle, lets get straight into it, here we have our favourite Glee performances - we never actuallly pretended to be cool.
All the songs will come from seasons 1-3 (aka the golden age) simply because we stopped watching after that...

Daisy

1. How Will I know - Whitney Houston

I love this song in its original and classic Whitney version, however Glee's simple A Capella version really hits the spot. A lot of the time I find slowed down, schmaltzy, vocal versions of big pop hits a bit annoying however I find this stripped back 'How Will I know' really beautiful. I have been singing this in the shower a lot recently and murdering the harmonies - I would highly recommend. Also with helpful Spanish subtitles if anyone needs those.

2. Paradise By The Dashboard Light - Meat Loaf

I always thought the cast of Glee were at their best doing a big, song-and-dance, all-out, ensemble number and this one is one of my all time favourites. There are matching dresses, synchronised dance routines, lots of key changes and sexually suggestive lyrics - what more do you want from a Glee perfomance?! It really kicks off at the 'Will you love me forever?' section - I dunno it just really gets me going (in a mostly non-sexual way). To give you a mental image of me whilst I watch this song - imagine a grandma at a really lively Barry Manilow gig - basically there's lots of bopping.

3. Like a Prayer - Madonna

This one features another classic and wonderful Glee staple - Gospel choirs appearing out of nowhere! The Madonna episode was always going to be sassy and amazing, there were a few I could have picked but this is my personal favourite Madge song. Now as admitted by the show, it sometimes seems like Mercedes (played by Amber Riley) is just brought in to do the huge, wailing notes, however watching this you can see exactly why.

4. The Journey Medley

Of course I had to get some Journey in there, but this is really the Journey to end all Journey! Starting with "Faithfully", "Anyway you want it/Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" and finishing on the song that started it all "Don't Stop Believing" - this performance from the season 1 finale manages to squeeze in four classic Journey songs and is simply amazing. Seriously 'Faithfully' gives my chills - is that really embarrassing? I think this is just about as unashamedly 'Glee' as you can get and that is exactly why I love it so much.

Lily

1. Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson

This is already an awesome song and although the singing is really good, it’s actually ‘the 2 cellos’ that I really like about this cover. That is some seriously impressive and badass cello playing! I didn’t think I’d explain playing the cello as badass but it really is, and it perfectly builds the tension for this song battle.

2. Start Me Up/Livin' on a Prayer - The Rolling Stones/Bon Jovi

I love the mash up of these two classic songs together and the performance which was a bit different to their usual preppy routine. Although Rachel does over-egg it a bit with her dancing which makes me cringe, it’s still a cool performance. I also really like Mercedes vocals in this song because she sings a bit more rock which I will obviously enjoy.

3. Raise Your Glass - Pink (Mini Warbler Version)

Technically this still counts because I do like this cover, and I like the warblers, but I had to choose this just for the mini warbler because he’s the cutest thing ever. He also has the dance moves down to a T which is impressive to say he really is miniature.

4. Run Joey Run - David Geddes

I for some reason enjoy this Glee cover just because it’s strange and hilarious. I remember watching the episode with this in, which was really funny because of Rachel’s brilliant video. Me and daisy also pissed our pants laughing at the video because of the way Jesse walks at the end, childish but funny.

Daisy & Lily

We both have one favourite in common in common and that is Matthew Morrison and Neil Patrick Harris performing this little baby...

5. Dream On - Aerosmith

Lily- I already love the original of this song and I have this cover on my phone because I think it’s so good, the vocals are insanely good especially the high note at the end, not many men could pull that note off! Plus who doesn’t love a good sing off?!  This would definitely be my song of choice for a street song battle, you know, if I went to those…

Daisy - Like Lil says its the high note that makes this one! I don't really like using 'EPIC' to describe things but sometimes there is no other way! These two give such a brilliant performance that I think is better that the Aerosmith original - old Steve Tyler can't hit notes like that one. I have to say however. neither can I and that definitely doesn't stop me trying. Plus - Lil I would pay good money to see you in a street song battle! (If only they existed)

Okay so there are our top picks. Now to finish, as a little bonus, we thought we'd share with you the most heinous, awful, embarrassing, gouge-your-eyes-out terrible thing to ever happen on Glee - that's right it's Matthew Morrison (aka Mr.Schue) doing 'The Thong Song'. Good luck erasing this from your memories...

Christ!

Anyway hope you enjoyed this playlist - RIP Cory Monteith, you were a brilliant Finn.
We should be back with another playlist next week but we'll make no promises - its taken us two months to get round to this one!
Byeeeee!

Friday Playlist - ish

Daisy here, and an apologetic blog post coming your way.
Okay, okay, we'll level with you. As you may have noticed we have got more that a bit lax with our Friday playlists. It seems to be the one thing we can't get done on time (or at all) and I don't quite know why - we really enjoy compiling them but it always ends up being such a long process. We put a lot of thought into our song choices and then between that, writing a little paragraph for each and embedding the videos (which we always seem to have trouble with) it seems to end up taking aaaaages. Anyway there are no excuses, we proclaimed Friday as playlist day and there will be playlists, damn it!! Having said that... we sort of don't have one for this week... sorry!

We will try our hardest from now on to bring you one every week but for now you will have to settle for a different sort of musical treat and I'll just share with you my latest musical obsession, FLEETWOOD MAC! I know I'm reaaaally, really late to the party on this one but honestly I have never really listened to them properly until now. Now I have I am utterly sucked in, especially by 'Rumours' which has instantly skipped up to my very exclusive list of albums on which I love every single track. Its a magical, beautiful playlist all by itself, so lay back, relax and let this inside your ear-holes, and whether you've heard it a million times or you're a newbie like I was, you'll love it either way.

Lots of love (and much much apology)
Daisy

Friday Playlist - Guilty Pleasures

Whether we're willing to admit it or not, we all have those songs in our music collections that we're cripplingly embarrassed by. They taint your otherwise *impeccable* music taste, you pray they won't turn up on shuffle when your friends are in the room and they prompt you to make excuses like 'oh yeah I used to like that when I was about 13, oh 2007....' or 'oh that, that just synced from my parents iTunes' but secretly - you love them. Now here we are about to share our own secret embarrassments, on record, on the internet, for all of you to see - well, here go's nothing.

Daisy

Disclaimer: I have a pretty varied music taste so what others consider to be a cheesy 'guilty pleasure' I would probably happily admit to enjoying - for example my Mum suggested I include Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' I LOVE THAT SONG and I don't care who knows it. In light of this, this playlist turned out to be a lot harder than I thought it was going to be - believe me these are the tip of the embarrassing ice-berg!

1. JLS - One Shot

This is most definitely one of those songs described above that makes you reminisce about your youth (or 2010) and then ironically sing along, except I would, and have, listened to this in my room alone... ahh. Its completely unoriginal boy-band crap, with naff YOLO filled lyrics and a side-step based dance routine - the video even has rubbish special effects - but I actually really enjoy every bit of it.

2. Nickelback - Rockstar

Whether you loved it or hated it there was a time in 2006 when this was the biggest song in the world. As it went, everyone loved it, played it to death, learnt every word and then about two weeks later everyone despised it. Often cited as the perfect example of why everyone hates Nickelback so much, years later I have kind of funnily come back around to this one. Its definitely an abomination but I still know every word and when it manages to sneak out of pop cultures dark corners from time to time I won't hesitate to sing along.

3. David Guetta & Showtek feat. Vassy - 'Bad'

A more recent entry in comparison to all the naughties pop, I don't just like this song - I am obsessed by it. I imagine most of us between the ages of 17 and 25 will have had our fair share of drunken nights out soundtracked by David Guetta, shouting the lyrics and flinging ourselves around in an attempt at dancing but I doubt most of us have listened to this in the morning or in the evening over  a cup of tea. I have done both. I've requested it in clubs, I've listened to it ten times in a row, I love it. I'll leave it at that.

4.Kate Winslet - 'What If'

Most people probably don't know that Kate Winslet once launched a fairly short-lived singing career in 2001 or that this ballad was the product of it. I remember as a child this was the last track on NOW 50 (hehe) and it really pulled on my seven year old heartstrings. It was the soundtrack to the 2001 animated Christmas Carol and over ten years later the the seven year old within me still sheds a silent tear over this guilty pleasure.

5. Daniel Bedingfield - 'If You're Not the One'

Ahhh what a classic. I was almost unsure about calling this one a 'guilty' pleasure because I'm pretty sure this is universally recognised as an amazing song - or is that just me? Either way once I'd thought of it I had to include it, if only as an excuse to listen to it on repeat a couple of times Those vocals are so difficult yet so satisfying to try and imitate - 'IS THERE ANY WAY THAT I COULD STAY IN YOUR AAAAAAAARMS?' - ah god I love it. Bedingfield himself describes the song as 'cheesy' with 'sappy lyrics and meek tune', he then in the same interview, went on to compare himself to Bob Dylan - nuff said.

Lily

I came up with the theme for this weeks friday playist but I didn't know how hard it would be to think of my 5 songs. Because I usually listen to rock and metal people are often surprised when I like something a bit different but I enjoy listening to different things sometimes (I ain't no music snob!). So for today's playlist I am swapping metal bands for boybands, enjoy!

1. 5 Seconds of Summer – 'She Looks So Perfect'

Okay, I publicly admit it, I like 5 seconds of summer! I like rock and metal but I just can’t help but like them (damn my inner teenage fan girl). I used to hear this song on the music channel and I would leave it on because my mum said she liked it, but secretly I liked it too. Their songs are super catchy and I admit I fancy the pants of all of them (especially Michael). Shoutout to my friends Megan and Sally who I listen to 5sos with, and are also secret 5sos lovers.

2.Chad Kroeger ft. Josey Scott - 'Hero'

This has been a guilty pleasure of mine for a long time, you can’t deny the vocals on this song are awesome. Me and daisy agreed anything that’s Nickleback/Chad Kroeger is definitely a guilty pleasure, but the fact it’s a Spiderman ballad does redeem it slightly… or maybe it doesn’t. Regardless I still love this song and the massive notes in it.

3. Conchita Wurst - 'Rise Like a Phoenix'

I had to include this song because it’s just brilliant. It’s not I song I would regularly listen to, but me and mum love to blast this out in the car. We got really into Eurovision this year and we loved Conchita, although Lordi are still my favourite Eurovision entry for obvious reasons. Mum decided to buy her song which I regularly forget is on our iTunes, so it makes me chuckle every time it comes on. Plus you can’t beat a good Eurovision power ballad - especially sung by a gorgeous woman with a beard.

4. Glee Cast – 'Dream On'

This song is a guilty pleasure because it’s a glee cover, but the original song is obviously already awesome. The vocals in this cover are amazing, Matthew Morrison and Neil Patrick-Harris pull off the high note at the end perfectly. It’s a song you can easily mime and look like a complete fool to, which is always a good thing.

5. Backstreet Boys – 'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)'

This is an iconic song from my childhood, it came out the year I was born but I still love it now.  I have this song on my phone purely for the nostalgia; it puts me in a good mood. I also love the video; anything with a Halloween haunted house theme is good by me!

Thanks for joining us on our cheesy journey through the last 20 years! Hopefully you will find as much guilty pleasure in these tracks as we have.

Friday Playlist: The Soppy One

Hello! Here we are again with some musical delights for the Friday Playlist and this week we're going to be a couple of soppy beggars and tell you the songs that make us cry - that's right we're getting deep. Well, tissues at the ready we might as well jump straight in!

Daisy

Alright, I'm just going to say it: I'm a crier, songs make me cry. There it is, I'm a big fat softy.

1. Don Mclean - 'Vincent'

Ok,  I admit this is a classic weep inducing song but I fall for Don Mclean's easy listening tribute to Vincent Van Gogh every time. I know a lot of people find this song a bit fluffy but the melody and the imagery of the lyrics really resonate with me - like many people including Mclean I find Van Gogh's paintings beautiful and his story incredibly tragic. Its fascinating that a song totally about someone else's life with no way of relating to your own can still move you.

2. The Smiths - 'Please, please, please let me get what I want'

Now I know for a fact that I am not the first person in the world to cry at a Smiths song - lets be honest Morrissey knows how to make people feel all the feels. Now the lyrics are full of sadness, desperation and longing but what really gets me in this song is that damn mandolin solo! I feel like the whole song builds up to that moment and when it finally arrives I genuinely struggle to keep from welling up and apparently Morrissey agrees - he is known to visibly break down during this instrumental during live performances of the song.

3. Dog Is Dead - 'Two Devils'

This is a chilled and ethereal song but with some seriously creepy and weird lyrics, and played at a loud volume is really dramatic - all in all its pretty amazing. Its also pretty sad. With the vocal provided by lead singer Rob Milton feeling like there's real emotion behind it, this is a great soundtrack for when you're lying in bed, over-thinking things and generally feeling a bit miserable. As fans of Made in Chelsea might notice this is the song they used to play over all the dramatic scenes just before the ad break, proving that 'Two Devils' is seriously like totes emosh, yah  *cue awkward silence*.

4. Keane - 'Bedshaped'

To be honest the less said about this song the better! Its a pretty good song and is quite sad but its not the music that makes me cry its the music video. I have vivid memories from when I was a child of seeing my dad watching this (Keane is a dad band after all) and having to leave the room in tears. This video seriously traumatises me and I still cannot stand to watch it - ITS SO UPSETTING! I'll let you guys judge for yourselves.

5. The Beatles - 'Real Love'

Ah this one is a real kicker. As anyone who knows me will be well aware I have a huge Beatles obsession and while many of their songs make me feel feelings this one has to be the epitome. 'Real Love' is a song written by John Lennon during the 60s but never released before his death in 1980 (cry) and then recorded with overdubs by the three remaining Beatles in 1995 as part of the anthology project (double cry) and besides all this Beatles based soppy-ness its a heartwarming love song in its own right. Funny story, the first time I ever heard this song was when me and my brother had just completed Beatles Rockband (an emotional activity to start with) and had received this song as an in-game reward as well as an accompanying interview with George, Paul and Ringo from 1995 talking about the song. Well needless to say this totally finished us off and we both burst into tears and ended up wiping our noses on a Hong-Kong Phooey sock. Yes I am really that sad.

Lily

Ok, well when Daisy told me this week’s theme I knew I would struggle as I’m not the type of person to cry very easily. I get teased for being an ‘ice queen’ as I’ve only ever cried at one film (king kong) so I don’t often cry at songs either. But I’m not totally heartless, all these songs are sad and could definitely have the potential to make me tear up.

1. Gary Jules - 'Mad world'

This is an obvious choice as it’s a pretty universally known as being a sad song, it’s on loads of sad movies and adverts.  I quite like this song but you definitely have to been in the mood for it. the lyrics for this song are very sad, and you would have to be hard as nails (like me;) ) to not let this song make you cry.

2. Avril Lavigne - 'When you’re gone'

I remember listening to this song in my early teens and thinking it was the saddest thing ever, this probably did make me cry at some point as I was a 12 year old girl when it came out. Me and daisy were big Avril fans and have both been through phases when we wanted to look like her (Claire’s tie necklaces and all). The video for is very sad but it’s the old guy that nearly gets me, he’s so old, and cute, and sad.

3. Myles Kennedy - Hallelujah

This song is another universally known sad song, the lyrics are quite dark and it’s quite a stirring song. This version is by Myles Kennedy of alter bridge (who I love), he sings it really nicely and conveys lots of emotion. Ahh the ‘feels’.

4. Evanescence- 'My immortal'

This song is sad for obvious reasons, the lyrics are very sad and Amy lee’s voice is perfect for this kind of song. She can do the soft and powerful parts really well and it’s the bridge where she really belts it out that gets you most.

5. Queen - 'Who wants to live forever'

I remember watching the video this song when I was little for at my grandma’s house (she’s a massive queen fan). This song is really sad because Freddie mercury died so young and It’s quite relevant to him. The song was also written for the film highlander, it is featured in the scene in the film where ‘Connor MacLeod must endure his beloved wife Heather MacLeod growing old and dying while he, as an Immortal, remains forever young’.  I don’t know which what would make you cry more; the scene, or Christopher lamberts awful Scottish accent.  But nevertheless this song is definitely a tear jerker, and anything with a full orchestra in the background can definitely move you. My favourite part is 2.08 onwards.

Don't mind us, we'll jut be over here weeping. :'(

Friday Playlist: Zombie Apocalypse

Hello, and welcome to Friday's regularly scheduled posting: the Friday playlist! Each week we will choose a theme, pick five songs each and compile them into a lovely playlist for your auditory enjoyment - simple. This week our musical choices are picked to soundtrack a zombie apocalypse, basically the music we think would make you feel like a zombie killing machine and all around bad-ass mother fucker - helping you fend off the undead horde and improving your chances of surviving the end of the world as we know it.

Daisy

1.AC/DC - 'Shoot To Thrill'

OK lets start out with an obvious one. There is a very good reason Iron Man flies around dealing out superhero style justice with this song in the background: it is made for kicking ass. It makes you feel cool, in control and most importantly like you are capable of dealing out a serious can of whoop-ass.

2.Dick Dale - 'Misirlou'

This song needs no words or face-melting guitar solos to make you feel like you're the boss. Put this on and you may be able to convince yourself you are in a Quentin Tarentino film - from then on swift, accurate and intensely gruesome killing will be a piece of cake, the zombies don't stand a chance.

3.Pendulum - 'Witchcraft'

Plenty of Pendulums numbers are great for getting you fired up but this one I think will work particularly well. This bass-heavy classic will get your adrenaline going just long enough to fight your way through a crowd of the infected and the vaguely epic/apocalypse-y lyrics don't hurt either. Plus I used to love this song, oh 2010. O.k I still kind of love it.

4.Rage Against the Machine - 'Killing In The Name'

This song is ANGRY and I there's one emotion you're going to want to be feeling in order to survive the zombie takeover its anger! From the start of the song this manic feeling builds and builds until the last third and that's when you go into full-on, wide eyed, guns blazing, zombie killing action. You're not going to sit around mourning the loss of your friends and relatives, you're going to get your rage on and destroy everything that stands in your way!

5. Edvard Grieg - 'In the Hall of the Mountain King'

An absolutely incredible song most people will have heard hundreds of times without actually knowing the name of. This song, to put it plainly, is the shit. Again this one is all about build up, with the first half slowly building tension, gradually getting louder and faster and louder and faster until BOOM at 1.46 the orchestra explodes! Symbols crashing, violins screeching, voices loud and frantic, your heart is pounding, your mind is racing! Phew, I feel quite worked up just writing this. If this doesn't make you want get up and kick some zombie butt then I honestly don't know what will.

Lily

1. Metallica 'My Apocalypse'

All 5 of my songs could have been Metallica because they have countless awesome songs that would be perfect for slaying the undead, but I thought this song fit the theme best considering its title. If I had to choose just one band to listen to during an apocalypse, it would definitely be Metallica.

2.  The prodigy – 'Breath'

I had a hard time picking just one prodigy song because they all make you feel like a badass killing machine, or a Charlie’s angel (as the films are loaded with prodigy tracks). And who doesn't want to feel like a Charlie’s angel?  - They’re beautiful, kick-ass and could probably high kick a zombies head off in one go.

3. Public domain – 'Operation blade (Bass in the place)'

This is the song from the first scene in the film Blade, when blade arrives at a sexy vampire rave and turns all the vampires into ash with silver bullets. The whole films soundtrack is made up of techno and rock tracks that are perfect for killing vampires, so I figured it would be pretty awesome for zombies too. The song starts off like any normal dance track, but at 1:12 the base drops and it really gets the adrenaline pumping and puts you in the zombie killing mood (as I found when it was played during a session of laser shooting).

4. Rammstein – 'Feurer frei'

There’s nothing like a bit of German industrial metal to get you angry and pumped up to kill some zombies in true bad ass style. This song would be perfect for a revenge killing spree of the zombies who turned your friends or family into the undead.

5. Dragonforce – 'Through the fire and flames'

This song includes one of the fastest guitar solos ever – need I say more? This song can only be described as epic, and would definitely make you feel like you were untouchable to the groaning mass of zombies approaching.

Yes, yes we do. Hope you enjoyed this weeks playlist!
