At the Movies - Best Big Sisters

'At the Movies' is a new feature to wildflowers where we showcase some of our favourite fashion moments from (you guessed it) the movies! This week its all about the most sartorially gifted, always cool, older sisters! They may not always be the stars of the show but they certainly know how to steal it, thriving on activities such as listening to way-too-cool-for-you bands, experimenting with veganism, sneaking out to get their belly buttons pierced and looking generally bomb-af in everything they wear.

1. Jeannie Bueller - 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'

If I ever get this good at layering I will consider my life a success. I mean, pink cardigan on top of people-print shirt on top of stripey t-shirt all tucked into black high-waisted trousers with braces - it's pretty much 80s perfection. The ever disgruntled Jeannie (played by 'Baby' herself, Jennifer Grey) sasses her way through this classic comedy looking cute as hell while kicking some serious ass in her quest to thwart younger brother Ferris - one killer outfit is all she needs to make it onto this list! Also, check out the baby-faced, pre-winning Charlie Sheen in the classic 'Ferris' clip - *swoon*.

2. Debbie Thornberry - 'The Wild Thornberrys'

Suuuure, 'The Wild Thornberrys' started as a TV show but they did appear in several movies, and Debbie was just too cool to keep off the list! A grunge queen and fluent in sarcasm, Debbie can usually be found rocking a classic combo of a flannel shirt, crop top and baggy jeans - a quintessential grungey outfit complete with razor sharp cat-eye liner and a serious mane of blonde hair. Unfortunately the hair-over-one-eye look never quite looks this cute in real life (I think 2005-2009 serve as a hideous testament to this *emo flashbacks*) but Debbie works it. This combined with her gives-no-shits attitude makes her one fabulously angst-y big sister.

3. Kat Stratford - '10 Things I Hate About You'

The 'Shrew' herself from this classic 90s update of Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew', Kat definitely fits the permanently anguished older sister stereotype and is the polar opposite of sugary sweet and super popular sister Bianca. I mean really, she's not a heinous bitch, she's just surrounded by morons! Kat spends the movie dishing out feminist zingers while looking tough and very cool in combat boots, hoop earrings and a veritable plethora of t-shirts. It isn't flashy but Kat is a girl all about dressing for herself and no one else - she ain't out to please no man and that's exactly what makes her such a compelling romantic lead and kick ass big sister. Hey, if Heath Ledger's Patrick Verona digs it, it cant be bad! * brb, crying over Heath :'( *

Testing the Trends - Blue Eye Make-up

Almost every day it seems there's a magazine or style blog shouting about the hottest/must-have/brand spanking new trend. I'm all for new trends, they keep things interesting, however there's not much use knowing about the hot trend for fur covered mules or rainbow coloured body stockings if wearing them makes you feel like the worlds biggest tit.

That's why here at Wildflowers we're putting trends to the test to see if any of the high-fashion frippery can actually translate into a wearable look and the first thing we're tackling: blue eye make-up. While the highstreet is going mad for the 70s this A/W, this one's a trend straight out of every bad 80s music video ever that I have been noticing popping up everywhere. Be it shadow, liner or mascara blue has been allll over the eyes of some dead trendy individuals so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I have to admit, from about year 7 to 9 I was a frequent user of blue eyeliner and mascara (at the same time), so those awkward tween memories did not fill me with confidence about this one! However, after getting some inspiration from the catwalks and some top YouTubers I decided maybe I could manage to rock this eye make-up throwback after all. Here goes nothing...

Blue Eyed Babies...

Subtle mascara at Mary Katrantzou SS '16

Full on glamour from YouTuber Kathleenlights

Some subtle shimmery under-eye action

A sexy blue cat-eye

Bella Hadid bringing the drama in Glamour magazine

... and my attempt...

Well, what do you think?! As unsure as I was I actually really love the blue vibe! Paired with a simple face/lip I think this is a look I can definitely see myself wearing on an everyday basis and makes a very welcome change from the brown/neutral smokey eye that everyone has been after for the past four years or so. I feel like it brings out the blue in my usually fairly grey eyes and adds just the right amount of Cyndi Lauper fabulous-ness to my otherwise normal face. In a world obsessed with kardashian kontour I am totally rooting for blue eyes to bring some fun back into our make-up bags!

Love,

Daisy

Man Shirts, Short Skirts - Raiding my Boyfriends Wardrobe

Yes, that was a Shania Twain reference and I am not ashamed of it! I'm pretty sure all girls reading this who currently have a man in their lives/beds, will have either a t-shirt or a hoody that they have adopted for relaxing in - I don't know why, but there is nothing more comfortable than an oversize mans t-shirt, amiright?

In this post however I will be attempting to create wearable outfits using my boyfriend Hayden's clothes and hopefully show that menswear is not just for sleeping in!

The inspiration for this post came from a video by my hero/icon/QUEEEN Jen Im of the YouTube channel Clothesencounters. I will link her video at the bottom.

T-shirts

A good way to ease yourself in to wearing boy-clothes is a simple t-shirt. Here I've tried to do two looks, one for day and one for night, to show the versatility of a mans t-shirt.

Haydens: T-shirt  - ASOS
Mine: Skirt - H&M, Boots - Forever21, Choker - a £1 shop!

Wearing a mans graphic T-shirt for a night out is easier than you think - just squeeze into a tight skirt to suck in your wobbly bits, get on some stilt level boots and own it (whatever that means! :P).

Hayden's: T-shirt - Topman
Mine: Skirt - New Look, Shoes - New Look, Belt - Primark, Furry Thing - Bik Bok

For a more casual look I just took this stripey number and again tucked it into a skirt and added my favourite furry thing. You could wear shorts, jeans, wear it under a dress - the sky is the limit for you and your baggy T.

Trousers

Now, you might think with Hayden coming in at 6ft and me at a significantly more minuscule 5ft 5in then trousers would be a total no-go. However, my freakishly dis-proportioned limbs (seriously my torso is tiny -  I blame it entirely for my shortness) mean that Hayden's trousers are a remarkably good fit! Obviously this won't be the case for everyone but if it is then I would definitely say go for it. Real men's jeans are far more comfy than women's 'boyfriend fit' jeans, and you don't need to bother buying them!

Hayden's: Trousers - Topman
Mine: Top - American Apparel, Shoes - Primark, Bag - Accessorize, Belt - Primark

Apologies for the blurry face in these pictures, not sure what happened, but at least you can see the trousers! I'm a huge fan of tartan so I absolutely love these and they demonstrate how 'boyfriend trousers' can work just as well as jeans.

Hayden's: Jeans - Topman
Mine: Blouse - Next, Shoes - Primark, Tassel Thing - Vintage (Grandma's)

Aaaaand here they are, the real boyfriend jeans. I've girlied them up here with a flowy blouse and some slinky heels.

Outerwear

Lastly I'm tackling jumpers and shirts - things that can work brilliantly for keeping cozy and looking smart. Again I've gone for a casual and a more dressy look to really show off the versatility your man's threads can have.

Hayden's: Shirt - Next
Mine: Trousers - Topshop, Bralet - eBay, Boots - New Look, Bag - Primark

Here I've gone for a sort of un-done tailored look, using a crisp suit shirt over these tapered leg trousers and lacy bralet and finished off with boots - pairing masculine items with something a bit sexier to make a (hopefully) classy evening ensemble.

Haydens's: Jumper - New Look
Mine: Shorts - Charity Shop, Boots - River Island, Hat - H&M

This is easily the most casual look I made but it is still perfectly acceptable for venturing out in public! I pretty much lived in this jumper for the last few (stressful) weeks of uni and after this treatment as a veritable comfort blanket it is still one of my absolute favourite things to borrow.

Hope you enjoyed my boyfriend-borrowed outfits! Why not instantly double your wardrobe and get borrowing yourself?

Lots of lurrve,

Daisy.

Wimbledon 2015 - My Predictions

Hello, tis Daisy! Well everyone has already started on the strawberries & cream and cracked out the Pimms (thought I'd get all the cliches out of the way early on) so perhaps my predictions are a little late coming but I'm a huge tennis fan and have been enjoying this years championships so much I decided I should write about it. As this is a fashiony type blog I toyed for a second with the idea of writing about the women's on-court style at Wimbledon before I shook myself and remembered that we're watching for great displays of female athleticism, not to judge them on their little white dresses (white all look basically the same anyway). So, I decided to leave the judging to the Daily Mail and focus what SW19 is really all about - great tennis!

I have to admit I have only just stopped sulking after a poor performance against Dustin Brown sent my all time favourite, Rafa Nadal, packing. Despite his status as one of the all time greats the last four years as a Rafa fan at Wimbledon time have been painful to say the least, but as always he was humble and gracious in defeat (if you can't tell, I'm kind of in love with him). The gorgeous Rafa aside, I will continue to enjoy the Championships regardless - not having a favourite to root for in some ways takes the pressure off, allowing you to relax and just enjoy some good tennis without your happiness hinging on the outcome! With that said here are some of my thoughts and predictions as we enter the latter stages of the tournament...

Gentlemen's Singles

Who I'm cheering for...

Now that Nadal is out I've had to re-evaluate who it is I'll be cheering for in the mens side of the competition. After climbing the rankings and his recent win at the French Open Stan Wawrinka has been on my radar more and more and I actually rather like Stan the man. Previously he had only been heard of as the Swiss number 2, always in the shadow of the inimitable Roger Federer, but recently he has shocked everyone by stepping out and becoming one of the strongest players on the tour. I don't really have many reasons for my sudden Stan fandom other than the fact he plays amazing tennis and he kind of reminds me of a cute woodland creature - perhaps its because he is still the slight underdog when it comes to playing the big four - whatever the reason I'll be cheering him on as he enters the last 16.

This second one might be very a very predictable answer for a Brit, but believe me its taken me a long time to warm to everyone's favourite Scot, Andy Murray. For years I was very unpatriotic and just couldn't get behind the British number 1 - I thought he was boring, grumpy and not as good as everyone wanted him to be. However, after I screamed the house down cheering him on in the 2013 Wimbledon Final I could deny it no longer - I quite liked him. I think since he really stepped up in the last two years to be a true part of the top four, his public persona has come on leaps and bounds. Granted his interviews are still often rather dry but, especially off-court, he has increasingly let people see a more human side to his persona and there is absolutely no denying now that he is a phenomenal tennis player. If he has the momentum to make it to the final I will definitely be screaming the house down once again.

My Final Predictions...

I think it is highly likely that it will be a Murray/Djokovic final. Both players are at the top of their games, playing effortlessly through the early stages and both seem to have a great deal of momentum. As for the winner, I'm going to be hopeful and say Murray will bring us a British Wimbledon champ once again.

Ladies Singles

Who I'm cheering for...

Well, in another display of patriotism I am currently writing this while going absolutely nuts for Heather Watson vs Serena Williams. I've liked Watson but never been a huge fan and I really didn't think she stood a chance against the world number 1 and seemingly unstoppable Williams. It currently stands at two sets all with Heather up two breaks in the third set, and she is playing unbelievably brilliantly - I'm beside myself!! Whether she wins or looses, I have been so impressed with her in this match and will definitely be watching out for her more in the future.

I have also been rooting for a more experienced player, Maria Sharapova. Once the golden girl of the sport she has been down on form in the past few years and I would love to see her Wimbledon once again (with her last victory in London being 10 years ago). She is still fantastic sportswoman and a favourite of the sport and I would love to see her win another slam.

(Forgive me for writing less about the Ladies but this Watson match is really hotting up!)

My Final Predictions...

Well, I'm a bit stuck here now! Half an hour ago I would have said Serena was a shoe in for the final, no doubt about it - but now it seems anything can happen! I think last years champion Petra Kvitova will be in there from the other side of the draw, but given the match I'm watching I don't want to jinx anything so I'll not say anymore!

Right, I'm off to watch the rest of the days tennis - I hope you've enjoyed my thoughts and we'll see if any of my predictions come true!
Thanks for reading,

Daisy.

#OOTD - Celebrating Freedom

Ola! Just a quick and fairly inconsequential outfit post to commemorate my finishing university on Saturday! I'm feeling both very excited and terrified at the prospect of having to be a real adult person in just over a months time and I'm determined to make the most of my last few weeks as a student (there will most definitely be tears on the 30th of June).
On Saturday night I went out to celebrate my new found freedom by stuffing myself with Chinese food - Leicester-ites, go to Terracotta ITS AMAZING and fairly unknown (its tucked away round the back of the Highcross). Here's what I wore for my post-exam feast...

Jeans - Topshop, Turtleneck - Primark, Shawl - River Island, Boots - Topshop, Bag - Accesorize.

A very excited face with no neck.

A very surprising lack of charity shop present in this outfit - what can I say, I'm a grown-up now (I'm really not, plz send help!). Its a good job these jeans are fairly stretchy because let me tell you there was some serious food baby happening by the time I was finished - I must have eaten at least 500 dumplings across that six course buffet extravaganza!

Hope you enjoyed this outfit and restaurant recommendation from this most momentous occasion and  to my pals with exams still to go GOOD LUCK!! TTFN,

Daisy.

10 Independent Ladies Slaying Instagram

Hello! Its Daisy, apologies for the two month absence but all of this third-year uni work has been crushing my soul and stopping me from doing anything other than working, not working and feel guilty about work, eating a lot, playing a lot of Sims 2 and just generally going round in a hateful work-procrastination cycle. However, with only one exam left to go I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel and am ready to get back into normal activities such as; waking up before 3pm, wearing something other than leggings and my boyfriend's jumper and blogging! Woo!

One of our very first Wildflowers posts was my Monday Madness about 10 amazing artists to follow on Instagram, where I recommended pictures other than Kim K's arse that were worth looking at (although I must admit I do love stalking dat butt) and you can read that here.

Today I'm bringing you a similar post but this time I'm recommending some lovely ladies of Instagram - whether they're models, bloggers or just ordinary girls with incredible taste - who are killing it with their own unique aesthetics. These girls go hard - with clothes, with make-up and with life in general and are a constant source of inspiration for me because of their unfaltering dedication to their own individual looks. Basically they are slaying on a daily basis by simply being themselves and not giving a shit what other people might think - they have carved out their own space on the internet and are unabashedly showing off what they love and how they look - something I think is so worthy of praise! So, without further a do, in the words of Bikini Kill - here are 10 rebel girls who are the queens of my world...

1. @nyanelebajoa

Nyane Lebajoa is a model, Instagram Queen and all around badass with silver-white hair and a body to die for. She has flawless style, FLAWLESS make-up and isn't afraid to show a bit of nip (unless Instagram censors it that is - Free the nipple!). Her feed will give you style inspiration, food envy and one hell of a girl crush - what more could you want?!

https://instagram.com/nyanelebajoa/

2. @mermaiderotica

Amy-Lee is a tattooed red-head with a Disney obsession. She is a total modern bombshell with her vintage hair, curve-hugging dresses and a penchant for sexy lingerie but shes also pretty hilarious and honest - posting some of the most relatable memes ever to grace the internet. She's also all about pop culture, from Disney jumpers to American Psycho dresses and with tattoos ranging from Aristocats to Dexter - she is the kitsch beauty your feed needs.

https://instagram.com/mermaiderotica/

3. @mimielashiry

If you have Tumblr you'll probably recognise Mimi. As the ultimate bohemian-sunkissed-summer-hippie-dreamgirl you've probably already seen thousands of pictures of this Australian born model across the site- who knows, she may be the most re-blogged person ever, and with good reason. She post gorgeous pictures, not only of herself but of nature as well, from all across the world (her life is goals af) - its always summer in MimiElashiry-land so make her Instagram your ultimate escape.

4. @ilovebrucewillis

The only information you get from ilovebrucewillis' profile is that her name is Amy, but that doesn't matter - Amy is all about aesthetic. Her Instagram is all about her look, whether that's selfies wearing slogan tees or sculptures made from condoms (her first post is captioned 'welcum my children pls leave all ur food offerings at the door of my anus') and somehow it all fits together in a big ball of colourful, beautiful weirdness! Amy is hilarious, kooky and her hair is some Mia Wallace level perfection - I just can't get enough of this beyond cool and gorgeous enigma.

https://instagram.com/ilovebrucewillis/

5. @thetinylittlegirl

Native Australian Beth aka thetinylittlegirl is big on colour, cosmetics and cartoons. She posts the most perfect Simpsons and Adventure Time screen caps on the regular, is COVERED in tattoos and boasts some of the coolest nails I've ever seen. Beth somehow manages to be relatable and down to earth while at the same time looking like some sort of amazing acid princess and her posts are always so positive - my kind of girl.

6. @plaaastic

On the other end of the scale we have plaaastic who goes by the name of GG and whose Instagram is almost completely devoid of colour entirely. Like the rest of the girls on this list she makes Insta look like an art form, with a complete devotion to her black, white and macabre-all-over aesthetic and is most often found smoking, hanging out on the street looking cool and wearing a lot of platforms. GG is out there in a way most people wouldn't dare to be, she is strange and it suits her and she is devoted to her own unusual way of life - something we should all admire.

7. @lillipore

Natasha Lillipore is a blogger and illustrator who is all about pink, vintage and girlish glamour with dangerous and taboo twists.  With her long, black hair and incredible clothes and make-up, she looks like one of her own drawings come to life, and like a real world Morticia Addams completely owns the dark, seductive and mysterious vibe. Follow for flawless red lipstick and more than a hint of suggestive imagery.

8. @lupescuevas

Lupe Sujey Cuevas is a make-up artist and (I'm fairly certain about this one) a wizard. Using just the power of make-up and wigs Lupe is a true chameleon, totally transforming herself and creating a whole array of beautiful looks and images - seriously these are selfies on a whole new level! She has also started a YouTube channel to show how she gets these amazing results (be warned, its not easy!) and the two combined are a goldmine of inspiration and a reminder of transformative powers of some well applied make-up.

https://instagram.com/lupescuevas/

9. @confetticrowd

If the Confetti Crowd aren't squad goals then I don't know what is. Made up of UK bloggers Lucy, Heidi, Cheyenne, Tiger and Helena, Confetti Crowd are a girl gang of bright and sassy dressers - think the Spice Girls of the blogosphere! They all have amazing individual style, together they are on a whole new level and are never afraid to have fun with what they wear. Bright and creative, who cares what other people think when you're surrounded by a gang like this?

10. @thegrannygram

Last but certainly not least is thegrannygram. As its rightly says in her bio 'Age is just a number' and as this amazing woman shows there is no limit on looking sassy and fabulous! This granny wears things that others her age wouldn't even dream of wearing and good on her! Just because you get old, that doesn't mean you stop being yourself, and I think this OAP could teach us all a lesson about dressing and acting as you please, regardless of our age. Just like my Mum always says to me - 'when I start wearing all beige, shoot me!'

https://instagram.com/thegrannygram/

So there we have it, my favourite inspirational ladies of Instagram. Whenever I'm unsure about something I'm wearing, or indeed posting on Instagram, I think about these women who are so unafraid of being themselves and they inspire me to try and do the same. Have a luuurvely weekend everyone!

Daisy.
